Friday Night Banner Making and a Little Baking

Tonight was the perfect Friday night. There were places I could have gone, a bbq and game night actually, and I love game nights. I just decided that I have been so exhausted this week that I just want to sit at home and do whatever I feel. Before I get into my Friday night though I'll just talk about the week I have had. Compared to last week this week has been a complete 180 from the last, its been a hundred times better, maybe even a thousand times better. Last week I couldn't even get into my car without crying. I was emotional from sunrise to sunset and filled with anxiety. Then the weekend comes to an end and Easter is over and all the sadness just seemed to be gone. Well not gone, but the feelings that my grief was trying to consume me has significantly diminished. Why so anxious and emotional last week and this week I probably don't even think I have the energy to cry. Still not definite-period, Easter, Dereck gone, insurance crap-all logical possibilities.
I'll get back to my Friday night now. I was really tired after work because like I said I've had no energy at all this week. I ate dinner, chicken nachos, so nutritious I know, but since I have been exhausted all week I have been eating everything; chips, pasta, risotto, potatoes, granola bars, all carbs because that's all I seem to be craving and hoping that something will give me some energy.
I got bored with tv, I barely watch it anymore, and decided to catch up on some blogs. Read a few and then decided I better work on the banner I am trying to create for Liam's burial. A banner was made for his funeral and I wanted to create one myself to have at the burial with his new pictures. If you want to see the other banner and other funeral stuff check out the page below my header. I am not finished with the new banner but here is picture of what I am working on. I wanted it to be simple but to include at least 3 pictures, his name, DOB, and a quote. Not sure if I want to put borders around the pictures or what, maybe add some other colors, not to creative and need to play around with the tools for making things like this more. But this is what I have so far

After I got done working on that I decided I wanted to bake something. I love to bake and have always wanted to try and make homemade granola bars. Couldn't find a recipe that included everything I wanted in it, so I just through a lot of stuff that I liked together and baked it in the oven. Hope it tastes good, but will wait and try one tomorrow.  Doing this got me thinking about the things I wanted to do with my little one. I wanted to be one of those moms that made every meal for her kids, snacks included, and that is why Liam came to mind when making these bars. They are healthy and pretty quick to make, who needs boxed bars when you can make your own. Not that I would always have the time to be making snacks for the kids but its a nice thought, especially if we could make these things together. Of course there would be other fun things to be made also like no bake, cut out, and spritz cookies, brownies, cakes, and ice cream sundaes. I can't wait till that time comes.
Since I am talking about cooking healthy snacks and other things that I hope to one day do with my children I will also tell you about the Magic Bullet. I have had a regular blender for years and barely used it. I just thought it was a pain to use to make just one smoothie with. I had seen the Magic Bullet advertised a lot and heard good things about it, but figured I didn't need to spend the money on it because if I wanted a smoothie or something else blended I already had a blender.
Well then I got pregnant and decided I wanted to try and make all of my own baby food and had read that the Magic Bullet worked just as well as buying a baby food mill. That was reason enough for me to buy it then. I actually use the bullet all the time to make smoothies or iced coffee drinks, it is very convenient to use and easy to clean. It would have been the perfect thing to use to make food for my little one. I could puree fruits and vegetables like I do for my smoothies, and depending on what Dereck and I had for breakfast, lunch, or dinner we could puree that up also. I love that thing, but of course, for now it will continue to be used for making me some delicious smoothies, coffee drinks, and the occasional milkshake.

A Talk With The NICU Coordinator and Nurse

The head of volunteer services had sent me an email the other day wanting to talk to me about how I was doing in the NICU since it had been a couple weeks since I started. She also mentioned in her email that she was wondering how I was handling being there in regards to the loss of my baby.  I never once mentioned to the volunteer coordinator anything about me ever being pregnant or that I lost Liam.
Sure I would love to tell everybody about Liam and my true reasoning behind wanting to help cuddle babies in the NICU. I thought though that if I told her about Liam she wouldn't think I'd be emotionally stable enough to handle it or that maybe I would be one of the crazy people that would steal a baby. Remembering of course what I learned in orientation that the most common people to steal a baby is a mother who has recently lost a child.
I was getting nervous to want to go into to talk to her but sent her an email back that I would stop in on Thursday(yesterday) after my NICU shift. I was assuming that the girl who trained me in is who probably told the coordinator about my recent babyloss. I was wondering if she would share this info I told her about my life or keep it to herself.
So I was right about my trainer telling the coordinator about Liam. The good news is that she didn't care. She was just concerned about me and just wanted to know a little more about my situation. She explained to me that everyone has their own reasoning for why they want to volunteer and thinks that it is wonderful that I want to be there to help those babies. She also informed me she understands my grief because she had lost a child also, her child was older, but the pain is the same. She also said that if I ever am having a rough day that she fully understands if I can't make it in for my shift. She also let me know that even if its in the middle of my shift and I start having a hard time, that it is okay if I need to get up and leave early. That was so nice to hear her say that to me.

Yesterday I also received a phone call from my favorite nurse. Last time we spoke I asked her if there was any way I could get in touch with any of the other fetal surgery moms that had lost there babies also. She said she searched but that the two moms who lost their babies following surgery that were in the MOMS study were done at another hospital, which I knew, but because of that she can't get access to their info. She also looked through other fetal surgery cases that they have done and it appears that I just seem to be the only one to have my baby die in surgery, which I knew also since the doctors told me after surgery. She was sorry she couldn't help me more but in a way it is good to hear that she can't find any similar cases like mine. I guess that just proves that I went to the best possible doctors, it just sucks that I have to be the one and only.
Truthfully though, since I have talked to those two fetal surgery moms, whose babies lived and are growing and healthy, about their pregnancies following the fetal surgery and have all of you blm's for support, I have found a lot of hope and some much needed comfort. Still don't like the situation, and will always wish that things could have ended differently, but don't we all.

Dear Friends,
If you were to ask me to measure the love I have
for any member of my family,
I would be hard pressed to answer.
Surely my love is higher than mountain tops
And deeper than the oceans
And broader than all the deserts in the world.
So too is my love for the baby who has died.
How can I be asked to pack away mementos and memories
and not speak his name?
He is and always will be a part of me.
No one can crate the depths of the ocean,
The breadth of the deserts,
Nor can my love be boxed and carried away.
Dear friends,
Please do not set limits on my grief.
Neither my love
Nor the depths of my sorrow can be measured.
I am unable to heal on a timetable set by another.
Weeks and months have no meaning
when set against the measure of my love.
Walk with me please, this difficult road of recovery,
I promise you I will heal,
When I have grieved enough for me.

Infertility Myths

National Infertility Awareness week and Myths About Infertility Diagnosis http://www.resolve.org/national-infertility-awareness-week/home-page.html

I found these myths quite interesting and thought I'd share them with you all and also share some of my own thoughts and experiences in relation to them all.

Myth: If you just relax, you will get pregnant.

Busted!:  If only it were that easy! The fact is, the vast majority of individuals who have infertility have a medical reason, not a stress-related one. Upwards of 90% of all infertility cases are caused by physical problems.  In the female partner, the major causes of infertility are absent or irregular ovulation, blocked fallopian tubes, abnormalities in the uterus, and endometriosis (a chronic painful condition where tissue from the lining of the uterus migrates into the pelvis and attaches to the reproductive organs).  The male partner can have issues with sperm production which can lead to too few sperm, sperm which can’t swim correctly, and abnormally shaped sperm.Where the stress/infertility connection may come in tends to be after one has been trying for a while, and the stress of not conceiving easily may then contribute to the problem. But there has never been a study which shows that simply relaxing increases pregnancy rates. Research does show that infertility patients who learn and practice a wide variety of stress reduction techniques can have higher pregnancy rates than patients who don’t learn those techniques.

-Yup I am one of the ones who has fertility problems due to both absent and irregular ovulation, or as my doctor put it that I probably haven't ovulated in YEARS! I always thought stress played a larger role though, guess that's why it needed to be busted. I was incredibly stressed the 2 1/2 years trying to get pregnant, both at my body for not doing the job that I needed it to do(ovulate) and then it not doing its job led to another month of me not getting pregnant which equals more stress.  It is nice to read though that stress reduction rates have lead to higher pregnancy rates; hence why I am doing acupuncture again and plan on having a massage and body wrap before ttc again in June.

Myth:  You waited too long to have kids.

Busted!:  While it is true that fertility decreases with age, youth does not guarantee fertility. Many men and women in their 20’s have infertility. And women in their early 40’s can get pregnant and deliver healthy babies. However, if you know that you want to have children, the earlier you try, the less likely it is that you will have trouble.

- I just turned 30, so I guess I am right in the middle. My body now just has to do its job and work, but it is nice to know that infertility can strike at any age. Actually I wish none of us ever had to deal with infertility, that would be better.

Myth: It’s the woman’s fault.

Busted!:  Sometimes the fertility diagnosis lies with the woman, but it is just as likely to be an issue with her male partner. In order for a man to be fertile, he needs to have enough sperm (count or concentration), they need to be able to swim properly (motility) and they need to have normal shapes (morphology).  Other contributory causes can be erectile dysfunction or lack of libido.

-I wish I could blame the man, but in my case it is all my fault we were having a hard time getting pregnant. According to my Dr. after the sperm tests were done on my husband she states that his sperm are "wonderful!"

Myth:  Something you did caused your infertility (you are too fit, too fat, ate the wrong food, had a STD…).

Busted!:  There are few lifestyle factors which permanently impact fertility. Smoking can be one of them, but many people have stopped smoking and been able to conceive within months. Obesity, and being underweight, are both associated with an increased risk of infertility, but losing or gaining weight can relatively quickly bring you back to the fertile zone. Eating unhealthy food can put you at risk for diseases such as heart disease and cancer, but switching to a more healthful diet- focusing on fruits and vegetables, whole grains, lean meats, and dairy products are associated not only with a lower risk of disease but may increase one’s chance of ovulating normally. Once again, if you know that you want to have children, it is indeed a good idea to look at your health habits and if you have any which might hamper fertility, such as smoking, excess alcohol intake, being over or underweight, extremely vigorous exercise habits, or a big caffeine habit, adapting healthier habits can decrease your risk of experiencing infertility.

-Yeah this one I have issues with. I eat pretty healthy I would say. I don't eat fast food and eat very little deep fried food. I eat lots of fruits and vegetables, choose lean cuts of meat, eat whole grains, get enough calcium, and do enjoy some chocolate or ice cream. I do have a wee bit of a caffeine addiction, but when I became pregnant with Liam I was really good about only having 1-2 cups a day of coffee. I also rarely drink alcohol. I am a mover though, meaning I hate sitting still. I love to get outside hiking, walking, jogging, skiing, etc-. I am on the move a lot but I would never say I am an athlete- good shape- yes, but that was a huge concern to my doctor. She had told me I needed to exercise less, eat more, and gain some weight!  I always thought I lived a fairly healthy lifestyle, but hearing that upset me when I know so many people eat horrible or never exercise and have no issues with getting pregnant. So if any of this is a myth, my doctor sure felt it was a huge concern to me. I did however gain 5 pounds before the second IUI and did acupuncture, so maybe between the two, something did help. Not too sure on some of these myths, hmmmm.

Myth:  Infertility isn’t a disease.

Busted!:  Yes, it is. According to the dictionary, a disease is a “disorder or incorrectly functioning organ, part, structure, or system of the body”. Infertility in either the male or female partner is in fact directly due to some malfunction in the body, whether it be hormonal or structural.

- Stupid hormones is all I have to say about this one.

Myth: If you already have one child, you know you are fertile and will have no problems conceiving again.

Busted!: Infertility does not discriminate and can strike anyone at anytime throughout the childbearing years. Secondary infertility — the inability to get pregnant naturally or carry a pregnancy to term after successfully conceiving one or more children — is very common.  Approximately 12 percent of women in the United States have secondary infertility, and it accounts for more than half of all infertility cases.
Unlike those experiencing difficulty having their first child, people who are affected by secondary infertility are much less likely to seek  infertility treatments. Many in this situation are told that they have nothing to worry about, to just keep trying. This can lead to much frustration and loss of precious time.
A number of things can cause secondary infertility including age, damage or blockage to the fallopian tubes, ovulation problems,
endometriosis, and problems with sperm production. The testing and diagnosis process is the same as for primary infertility.
Don’t wait to see a fertility doctor (reproductive endocrinologist).  If you are having difficulty getting pregnant, the rule of thumb on
when to see a fertility specialist is if:
  • You are under 35 and aren’t pregnant within a year of actively  trying, or
  • You are over 35 and haven’t conceived within six months of trying.
If you have experienced two or more miscarriages, have a history of sexually transmitted infections, have irregular periods or have
especially painful periods, you should make that appointment even sooner.

- I just included this because I never had heard of secondary infertility until I read another blm's blog about it and find it quite interesting.  I guess I always assumed you were either fertile or just had infertility issues from the start. So naive I am, but love that I have learned so much from everyone's blogs and websites like these.

Afterlife

Lauren from http://ouremptycradle.blogspot.com/ asked a question a few weeks ago on her blog about what song makes you think of your angel(s) the most? I commented back to her but also decided I should post it here, I have been wanting to do it for awhile anyway.
The song is about a man who dies early and finds himself in heaven. Upon entering, he realizes that he has too many things to do on Earth, and needs to go back and make it right, but he has to escape from the afterlife. It doesn't at all relate to baby loss, but it is one of the first songs I heard on the radio after I was finally able to tolerate the radio, TV, or any loud noise really. In many ways though, I feel like it does relate to the way I feel most days since Liam has passed. Also on days after leaving work, when I have been emotional all day and have had to fight the tears back, I play this song on repeat until I get home, usually crying the entire time. I absolutely love it though! Definitely better to actually listen to then to read.

Afterlife by Avenge Sevenfold

Like walking into a dream, so unlike what you've seen
so unsure but it seems, cause we've been waiting for you
Fallen into this place, just giving you a small taste
of your afterlife here so stay, you'll be back here soon anyway

I see a distant light, but girl this can't be right
Such a surreal place to see so how did this come to be
Arrived too early

And when I think of all the places I just don't belong
I've come to grips with life and realize this is going too far

I don't belong here, we gotta move on dear escape from this afterlife
Cause this time I'm right to move on and on, far away from here

A place of hope and no pain, perfect skies with no rain
Can leave this place but refrain, cause we've been waiting for you
Fallen into this place, just giving you a small taste
of your afterlife here so stay, you'll be back here soon anyway

This peace on earth's not right (with my back against the wall)
No pain or sign of time (I'm much too young to fall)
So out of place don't wanna stay, I feel wrong and that's my sign
I've made up my mind

Gave me your hand but realize I just wanna say goodbye
Please understand I have to leave and carry on my own life

I don't belong here, I gotta move on dear escape from this afterlife
Cause this time I'm right to move on and on, far away from here
Got nothing against you and surely I'll miss you
This place full of peace and light, and I'd hope you might
take me back inside when the time is right

Loved ones back home all crying, cause they're already missing me
I pray by the grace of God that there's somebody listening
Give me a chance to be that person I wanna be
(I am unbroken; I'm choking on this ecstasy)
Oh Lord I'll try so hard but you gotta let go of me
(Unbreak me, unchain me, I need another chance to live)

I don't belong here, I gotta move on dear escape from this afterlife
Cause this time I'm right to move on and on, far away from here
Got nothing against you and surely I'll miss you
This place full of peace and light, and I'd hope you might
take me back inside when the time is right

More Amazing Stuff From Fellow BLM's

Thank you so much Shauna for the Pin Wheel, your garden is awesome! I love all of the different pictures, especially the ones with the heart with the L in it for Liam.

Also a big thank you again to Melissa for the music box. It is beautiful!

I have been trying to come up with something amazing to do for all of my fellow blm's like many of you have already done, and I think I have finally thought of something. Hopefully I can have it all figured out to share with everyone soon.
